 Position Overview

The Controller is based in the Palo Alto, California corporate headquarters. As a member of the Finance & Analytics team, you will interact with senior management on a day-to-day basis and have responsibility for managing Business Unit accounting, portfolio analytics, budgeting, cash management, internal and external financial reporting, and tax compliance.  The Controller will be responsible to hire, train, and supervise accounting personnel.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
 Property Investment Accounting
  • Supervise monthly review of third-party manager prepared property financial statements, resolve significant line item budget variances
  • Review monthly joint venture financial reports
  • Supervise annual joint venture audits and joint venture and ownership entity tax return preparation.
  • Manage property tax reporting and compliance
  • Manage lender and joint venture covenant compliance
  • Prepare monthly cash flow forecast
  • Review annual property operating budgets to ensure compliance with acquisition underwriting plan
  • Manage project cost accounting reports, contractor progress payments and contract administrator review of contractor lien releases and insurance
  • Manage periodic lender and joint venture partner draw requests
  • Other duties as assigned
Business Unit Analytics
  • Collaborate with the Value Add and Cash Flow Portfolio Operations teams to develop key metrics to track and measure the performance of the Business Unit portfolio assets
  • Oversee the development and preparation of various property operational analyses for periodic (monthly, quarterly and annual) reporting, and in support of sale, refinancing and other property strategy decisions
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA and/or Master’s in Accounting or M.B.A. required
  • 5-7 years managerial experience, preferably at least 3-4 years of public accounting experience or in the multi-family real estate sector
Knowledge & Skills:
  • Strong hands on management, organizational, communication and leadership skills
  • Excellent analytical, financial planning and budgeting skills
  • Solid understanding and working knowledge of GAAP, as well as audit best practices
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic environment and remain flexible while managing multiple deadlines and priorities – must be organized and accurate
  • Strong internal and external “customer” focus and excellent relationship management skills with a team-player mentality
  • Able to work independently, but must enjoy cross functional collaboration with business unit leadership
  • Passion for continuous improvement while developing process improvements necessary to help the business and accounting function scale
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in management of an accounting department including proficiency in hiring, counseling, and coaching
